Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Wuthering HeightsWuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What did I just read? WOW!

Throughout the whole time I was reading it, I was having this mixed emotion of liking, then hating, then feeling sorry for these characters.
It wasn't until towards the end that the only two characters I hated the most were Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Selfish people that really deserved each other. I feel sorry for all the innocent people they hurt along the way, especially Edgar Linton.

I've always thought this was a romance novel....no way is this in any way a romance novel. It's basically saying Romeo and Juliet is a romance, no, it's a tragedy.
Just like Romeo and Juliet, the tragedy was for all the people Catherine and Heathcliff ruined, from her maid to their children.

I don't want to keep going on about how much I hated Catherine, even though at the beginning of this novel I just wanted to go into this world and punch her for being so rude to everyone. And for having the same name as me. Lucky her daughter (also Catherine) was a kind person even if Heathcliff made her life a living hell.

It's probably just me, but I was shocked when I saw the word "slut" in this book, especially when it was first published in 1847, by a woman. Is this normal and okay in that time period to write that word? Or was Emily Bronte a rebel?

Overall I absolutely loved this book, I was captivated right from the beginning. If you haven't read this book yet, then do it now. Let's just say you might appreciate that your family isn't as fucked up as this lot.
